A little about Benin

Benin is a small country located on the West African coastline. It borders Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Niger. While the political capital is Porto-Novo, Cotonou is the largest city and the economic capital. The local currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF).

The official language is French, however there are several local languages such as Fon and Yoruba, and they are widely used across the country. Even though Benin is not a conservative country per se, most people are modestly dressed and that is generally encouraged for tourists.

Visa & travel information

  • Benin generally requires a tourist visa for visitors. You can check here to see if Visas are not required for your nationality.

  • Visas are not available upon entry at the airport or at any land or sea arrival point.

  • Visas can be obtained online via the following website: https://evisa.bj

  • Print the e-visa. You must keep the e-visa with you and present it at the request of border control officers, especially upon arrival at border inspection posts and during your stay in Benin, if needed.

  • Proof of Yellow Fever vaccine required.

  • No covid vaccination requirements – if vaccinated, bring your card.

  • We strongly recommend registration with your local embassy upon arrival. For example, if you are a US citizen, once in Benin you may register with the local US embassy.
